Are you stuck in a job you either hate or simply have no interest in? You're not alone. In fact, according to a global Gallup poll conducted in 2019, about 85% of full-time workers were not engaged at their jobs.

The primary reason why so many people stay in a job they don’t like is clear: It offers a consistent way to provide for yourself and/or your family. And then there’s often the hope that the job will lead to something better...eventually.

Nonetheless, having a passion for what you do not only can lead to a more fulfilling life, it can also make you more productive and successful. That doesn’t mean it’s easy to switch careers, though. It requires courage, tenacity, and careful planning, among other things. But it can be well worth it in the end. From determining what inspires you to working with companies like Creative Keystrokes, to planning and implementing the right strategies, here is some practical advice to consider if you want to take the leap into a career or business that you're passionate about.

Understand The Value of Passion

It’s not everything, but passion is invaluable when it comes to your career. Why? If you are passionate about what you do and not just in it to make money, then you will probably have a more positive outlook regarding your job overall. You’ll be more resilient and better able to persevere through challenges. And you’ll want to be the absolute best at what you do, which means that you’ll be more likely to work tirelessly at self-improvement. All of these factors come together to increase your chances of success and fulfillment.

Figure Out What Inspires You

When considering a change in your career, it’s essential to determine what exactly inspires you. Do you love writing, photography, graphic design, sewing, or decorating homes? Do you have a penchant for managing people, finances, or events? Are you fulfilled by consulting others through difficult decisions? Make a list of any hobbies or activities you love to do, and use that list to narrow down your options for a career path.

Go to School

If you have an idea of the direction you would like to take your career — or frankly, even if you don’t yet — consider returning to school. For instance, a master’s degree in education can go a long way in moving a teaching career forward. Not only will earning a degree equip you with the skills and knowledge necessary for your work, but it will also improve your prospects of success.

Make Connections

No matter what kind of career you are aiming for, making connections is critical. You never know what individual or group could connect you with a hiring manager for your dream job or with game-changing clients for your startup. Network every chance you get. Build a relationship with your classmates and teachers, people who work in your desired industry, and anyone else who could help you move forward.

Evaluate Demand

Demand is also essential when you’re making a career change. Research the level of demand for the specific skills and knowledge you plan to use in your career. Is your industry of interest thriving and expected to thrive in the foreseeable future? Are there enough people who want the services or products you’re planning to offer through your business? Whether you want to work as an employee or run your own business, choosing a niche with little demand is risky.

Present Yourself Well

If you have any chance of landing a job in a new dream career, you’ll need to make a great impression on potential employers. Create a killer resume. If necessary, put together a portfolio of all your best work, and be sure to thoroughly prepare for every interview.

Find a Mentor

Everyone needs at least one mentor; ideally, you will have two or three people who are experienced in your industry and who can provide you with pertinent advice and guidance on a variety of issues. It can be a teacher, a boss, someone you meet through a colleague — just try to find someone you can count on as you start your new career and navigate long-term challenges.

Keep an Open Mind

Maybe you will quickly find your dream job once you decide to change careers. But it might take some time. Try to keep an open mind while you transition. After all, changing careers is a big deal, and it’s important to think long-term. If you come across an opportunity that is in any way related to your ultimate goal, don’t count it out. Particularly at the beginning, you may have to compromise a little as you make your way to your dream job.

A turbulent year amid the COVID pandemic has prompted many to consider other career options, particularly when their careers of many years have seemingly gone away. Even those who have remained employed may be rethinking their career paths. While there are honorable reasons for staying in a job you hate, that doesn’t have to be your destiny.

Think long and hard about what you would be doing if you could do anything, and if you really want a change, then work tirelessly to put yourself on a new career path. Lastly, keep researching and learning about steps you can take throughout the process that will point you in the direction of success.
